October 21, 2010 - Learn about MAPs (Mindful Awareness Practices) for ADHD and Qigong with Mimi Handlin, MSW, Senior Certified ADHD Coach has been coaching adults and students since 2003. (www.addstressmanagement.com) As well as coaching, she is interested in helping her clients learn deeper self-care skills that can help them improve focus, feel more compassionate and accepting toward themselves, and reduce stress.
Mimi has been studying and practicing a Chinese moving healing meditation called qigong for eleven years. Qigong can be beneficial for people with ADD because it is a moving meditation that includes visualizing and affirmations. It connects us to our bodies and promotes focus and deep relaxation.
Mindful awareness is another skill for centering and renewal. It can help us pay attention to what we’re paying attention to. In a study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders (2007), Dr. Lidia Zylowska, a psychiatrist at UCLA, used mindful awareness as a treatment for ADHD. After 8 weekly training sessions, participants scored higher on attention tests and reported a better sense of well-being.
Mimi is in training with Dr. Zylowska to facilitate MAPs groups for ADHD. Come to this meeting to try out some mindfulness practices and basic qigong exercises. Please wear comfortable clothes and show up with an open mind!
